Policy Brief Working Paper: Key Insights and Recommendations Released

The MEGASKILLS project is pleased to announce the release of its Policy Brief Working Paper. This document provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, educators, and industry leaders on integrating soft skills into education and workforce training systems. Reflecting on the accomplishments of the first half of the project, we have identified the following policy implications:

- Elevating soft skills as core competencies

- Enhancing educational and workforce alignment

- Leveraging technology for personalized learning

The project began by identifying, together with academics and industry, the most critical soft skills for the 21st century, needed in today’s economy. This led to the development of a taxonomy and models that highlight the relevance of these skills across professional and societal contexts. Complex Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Adaptability, and Time Management emerged as essential for navigating modern workplaces. These skills were then tested for their relevance with both the research community and SME representatives.

Key Recommendations include adopting a Unified EU Framework for Soft Skills, the project research is a starting point to final list of definitive skills for an EU unified framework; embedding soft skills into national education standards and lifelong learning strategies to support continuous adaptability in a changing job market; promoting integration of soft skills with existing EU initiatives such as ESCO and EntreComp to ensure coherence across frameworks; Strengthening collaboration between education and industry is also key to closing the skills gap.

Looking ahead, future research and policy priorities should focus on updating the soft skills list to reflect technological advancements and AI integration. Additionally, formal education programmes across the EU should include dedicated training in these skills to support students' academic and professional development.

Building on its initial research, MEGASKILLS introduced psycho-pedagogical methods to train and assess soft skills through interactive environments like commercial video games. To track skill development, the project developed an AI system that analyses in-game behaviour and links it to key soft skills, offering a scalable, personalized training approach aligned with education and industry needs. The AI platform was tested with diverse groups—including SME representatives, migrants, and the unemployed—to refine its effectiveness.

Based on the approach findings, we recommend integrate gamified learning into educational curricula and corporate training programs, as it can be an engaging and effective way to teach key skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptability; further investment in research and development of gamification techniques — essential to ensure their scalability and accessibility in both educational and professional training contexts; use blended approaches to evaluate soft skills; leverage psychophysiological insights and AI models for personalized, scalable, data-driven assessments; develop policies for ethical AI use in education and training, and foster partnerships between AI developers, educators, and policymakers; design inclusive training programs accessible to all demographics.

As MEGASKILLS progresses, it focuses on refining its methods, incorporating stakeholder feedback, and ensuring the effectiveness of its tools.

While the project has made significant strides, it also highlights critical areas for further exploration, such as ensuring the accessibility of these tools for diverse populations and addressing ethical considerations in the use of AI and data-driven methodologies. To maximize the impact of MEGASKILLS, policymakers must prioritize the integration of these findings into national and EU-level education strategies, foster public-private partnerships for skill development, and continue refining frameworks to meet evolving workforce demands. By building on these insights, MEGASKILLS sets the stage for a more resilient, inclusive, and future-ready workforce.
