As we step into the New Year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on personal growth and explore new paths to success. Insights from the MEGASKILLS workshop with EU SME representatives shed light on the transformative power of self-awareness in navigating the complexities of modern workplaces.
Held online in early December 2024, the workshop was part of the MEGASKILLS project, organised by a research team from Palacký University Olomouc in collaboration with project partners, particularly the University of Southampton and European Entrepreneurs CEA PME.
Participants from various industries highlighted self-awareness as the cornerstone for developing essential soft skills such as communication, adaptability, and critical thinking. These interconnected abilities not only enable individuals to excel in their roles but also help foster more collaborative and innovative work environments. As one participant aptly noted, “Knowing yourself is the starting point for unlocking your full potential.”
The workshop revealed how cultivating self-awareness can lead to improved teamwork and decision-making. It empowers professionals to recognise their strengths and areas for growth, allowing them to delegate effectively, collaborate meaningfully, and prevent burnout.
A metaphor of a tree emerged as a fitting representation of soft skills: self-awareness, like the roots of a tree, provides the stability and nourishment required for growth. From this foundation, other skills like adaptability (the trunk), communication (the branches), and visionary thinking (the fruit) flourish.
The start of a new year offers a natural opportunity to nurture these “roots.” Whether through mindfulness practices, reflective journaling, or seeking feedback from peers, investing in self-awareness can lay the groundwork for a productive and fulfilling year ahead.
As the MEGASKILLS project continues to explore innovative approaches to developing soft skills - such as gamified learning - self-awareness remains central. Why not begin new year with a resolution to better understand yourself? After all, the journey to professional and personal excellence starts from within.
